A Definition

The title of this blog is "Perception is Everything". What does that even mean? Well...you've likely heard it before, but it's one of those cynical sounding sayings that people who do bad things that look good say to cover their butts. However, I have a different use for it. I think that when used as a tool of manipulation, the idea that perception is everything can be quite scary. But, when turned around and focused on ourselves, it takes on a new life and a new power. It is not merely that perception is everything, but that YOUR perception is everything.

Let me clarify with an anecdote:
Today, I woke up and realized I had less money than I'd like in my bank account. There were many ways to react to this.
  • There is the Bernie Madoff Perception is Everything way; I could have faked having lots of money and used credit and other means to continue living a lavish lifestyle.
  • There is the Depressing Perception is Everything way; I could have ran around the house crying the whole day and losing sleep over my situation.
  • Finally, there's the ideal Perception is Everything way; you change your perception to see that obstacle as an opportunity.
Just moments ago I decided on my action plan: eat out much, much less, if at all, walk to work instead of drive, go to the park and not the movies, etc. The Perception is Everything I advocate for can be applied to all situations and at all times. It is both an internal and external positive force that WILL change your life--it has mine on many occasions. Your perception is your power. Your ability to see life as you want it and then to make that manifest is your power. Your Perception is Everything.
